The trip

Ahmedabad is usually booked for a reason rather than a view: a flight from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport, a consultation at one of the big hospitals, a wedding, a term's worth of shopping. It is five and a half hours of good highway, most of it four-lane and much of it dull in the best possible way. Guests who are going for the city itself — the pols, the ashram, the stepwell at Adalaj — almost always take the second day.

The road we take

East to Rajkot first, then onto NH-47 past Bamanbore and Limbdi and straight in. Google Maps calls the whole run about 310 km and five and a half hours, and there are tolls along it. This is the best road out of Saurashtra, and the six-laning between Rajkot and Ahmedabad has taken real time off the middle of it. Gandhinagar and the Adalaj stepwell lie half an hour beyond the city, on the far side.

Good to know

  • For a flight, allow six to seven hours from your door in Jamnagar and then the airport's own time on top. For anything before mid-morning, travelling the night before is the calmer plan.
  • Two of the city's best evenings — Kankaria and Akshardham — are shut on Mondays, which is worth knowing before a Sunday departure.
  • The traffic inside Ahmedabad is the slow part of this journey, not the highway. The last ten kilometres can take as long as the fifty before them.
  • The road is tolled in both directions. Tolls are billed at what they actually cost, on top of the fare, and the chauffeur keeps every receipt for you.
  • A same-day return is a very long day in the car. The difference between the two fares in the table is smaller than most people expect, because the second day largely adds the chauffeur's allowance.

Why guests stay the extra day in Ahmedabad

The walled city and its pols

India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, listed in 2017 — some three hundred and sixty pols, the tight residential lanes with their carved timber, bird feeders and shared wells.

Sabarmati Ashram

Gandhi's home on the riverbank from June 1917, and the place the Dandi march set out from. It is the quietest half-hour anywhere in a loud city.

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

Built in 1572 and famous for a single window: the stone jali cut as a tree of life that the city has taken as its emblem.

Adalaj Stepwell

Five storeys of carved sandstone going down to the water, about 19 km north of the city on the Gandhinagar road. Open 8 am to 6 pm.

Kankaria Lake

A fifteenth-century tank turned into the city's evening promenade, open from ten in the morning to ten at night and closed on Mondays.

Akshardham, Gandhinagar

Half an hour past Ahmedabad, with darshan from 10 am to 7.30 pm and closed on Mondays — usually the last stop before the drive home.

Questions

Jamnagar to Ahmedabad — asked and answered

How long does Jamnagar to Ahmedabad take by taxi?

Around five and a half hours on NH-47 through Rajkot in ordinary conditions; Google Maps puts the road at roughly 310 km. Leave at six in the morning and you will be in the city comfortably before lunch.

Can you drop me at Ahmedabad airport?

Yes — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International at Hansol is on the north side of the city, so it is reached before the worst of the traffic. Send us the flight number and the terminal with your booking and we will set the pickup time from that.

Is a one-way Jamnagar to Ahmedabad drop cheaper?

A little, but not by half. The car has to drive home to Jamnagar empty afterwards, so that leg is part of what the trip costs us. We will put the one-way figure in writing alongside the round-trip one and you can choose.

Do you charge separately for the driver's night halt?

Never separately. The allowance counted for each day of the trip already covers the chauffeur's meals and his stay, and it is inside the fares shown above. Nothing about his night appears on your bill at the end.

Can we break the journey at Rajkot or go on to the Statue of Unity?

Rajkot is on the road and costs nothing but the time. Kevadia is a genuine detour beyond Ahmedabad and changes the shape of the trip. Either way, add the places as stops in the booking form and it prices the real itinerary instead of the straight line.
