The trip

Gir is the one trip where the taxi is the simple half and the permit is not. Lions are seen on a booked safari inside the forest, in a slot held in your own name, and the jungle trail shuts altogether for four months of the year. What we can settle for you is the road: a chauffeur who has driven it in the dark many times, and a car standing at the reception centre before your slot is called.

The road we take

South-east out of Jamnagar through Kalavad and down to Junagadh, then west into the forest. Google Maps makes the road 188 to 190 kilometres and a shade under five hours. The last stretch is narrow, unlit and often has nilgai standing on it after sunset, which is the best argument for reaching Sasan before dusk rather than after it.

Good to know

  • The jungle trail is closed to safaris from 16 June to 15 October every year, so a monsoon visit means Devalia or nothing.
  • Permits are issued only on the forest department's own site, girlion.gujarat.gov.in. Booking opens three months ahead and closes two hours before the slot, and there is no tatkal window.
  • Every visitor must carry an original photo identity card, and the reception centre wants you there half an hour before the time printed on the permit.
  • Winter slots run 6.30 to 9.30 in the morning and 3 to 6 in the afternoon; from March they move to 6 to 9 and 4 to 7. Tell us the slot and we will work the pickup time back from it.
  • A morning safari really wants a night halt — leaving Jamnagar at one in the morning to make a 6.30 slot is possible, but nobody enjoys it. November to March is the best season in any case.

On the way & at Sasan Gir

Lions, and the rest of what is in the forest

The Gir Jungle Trail safari

The booked gypsy safari inside the national park — 1,410 square kilometres of dry teak notified in 1965 over the Nawab of Junagadh's old shooting preserve. Slots run early morning and late afternoon, and one permit covers six adults with a child.

Devalia, the Gir Interpretation Zone

A fenced enclosure of about four square kilometres with bus and gypsy tours leaving through the day, and a far better chance of seeing a lion in a short visit. Closed on Wednesdays.

Kamleshwar Dam

The reservoir on the Hiran inside the forest, where marsh crocodiles bask on the banks and the water birds gather — often the quietest half-hour of a morning drive.

The Asiatic lion

Gir is the only place on earth where it still lives wild. Gujarat's May 2025 census counted 891 of them across the state, against 674 five years earlier.

Junagadh, on the way

The old capital under Girnar hill, with Uparkot fort and the Mahabat Maqbara. An easy halt in either direction, and one more reason to make Gir a two-day trip.

Questions

Jamnagar to Sasan Gir — asked and answered

How long does it take to drive from Jamnagar to Sasan Gir?

About five hours each way. Google Maps measures the road through Kalavad and Junagadh at roughly 190 km; our tariff is worked on a more cautious distance, so the fare holds whichever way the roads send us on the day.

Can Gir be done in a single day from Jamnagar?

For an afternoon safari, yes — away by eight in the morning, in the forest by three, home near midnight. A morning slot in one day means starting at one o'clock in the morning, which we will drive but would rather you did not ask for. The table above prices both shapes of the trip.

Do you arrange the safari permit?

No, and no taxi company can. The permit is issued by the forest department against the photo identity of each visitor, so it has to be booked in your own name. Hold the slot first, send us the time, and we will build the day around it.

Is Gir open during the monsoon?

The main jungle trail closes from the middle of June to the middle of October. The fenced Devalia zone usually keeps running through those months because it works on metalled tracks, but ring the reception centre before you count on it.

Can we put Somnath into the same trip?

It is the commonest pairing we quote. Somnath is a short run south from Sasan, and the two together make a comfortable two days. Put both places into the booking form as stops and it prices the loop rather than two separate journeys.
