The trip
Porbandar is the quiet day out. It is as close as Dwarka and a great deal less crowded, and what it offers is a town rather than a queue: the house where Gandhi was born, a temple to the friend who walked to Dwarka with nothing in his hands, a working fishing harbour and a long, plain beach. Families who have done Dwarka twice tend to book this one next.
The road we take
South-west out of Jamnagar on the state highway through Lalpur, then Bhanvad and Ranavav down to the sea — about 125 kilometres, which Google Maps gives two and a half hours. Much of it is single carriageway with villages strung along it, so it is slower than its length suggests and pleasanter than a highway. The coast road onward to Madhavpur and Somnath begins here.
Good to know
- November to February is the pleasant window, and the same months bring the migratory birds into the town sanctuary.
- Kirti Mandir opens early, so a seven o'clock start from Jamnagar puts you there before the heat and home again for a late lunch.
- Porbandar sits halfway to Somnath on the coast road, which makes it a natural first halt on a longer pilgrimage rather than only a destination in itself.
- The day stays inside the kilometres a day of hire includes, so a sedan is perfectly comfortable unless there are more than four of you.

On the way & at Porbandar
A morning in Gandhi's town
Kirti Mandir
The memorial to Mohandas and Kasturba Gandhi, unveiled by Sardar Patel in May 1950. Open from half past seven in the morning until seven at night.
The Gandhi family house
The three-storey home beside the memorial, where he was born on 2 October 1869 and which is kept much as it was. Twenty minutes, and the quietest twenty minutes of the day.
Sudama Mandir
Built between 1902 and 1907 in memory of Krishna's friend Sudama, whose story belongs to this town. Open 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening.
Porbandar Bird Sanctuary
A square kilometre of wetland inside the town itself, a few minutes from the railway station — flamingos, pelicans and spoonbills through the winter, and hardly anyone else there.
Barda Hills
The wooded sanctuary fifteen kilometres out, notified in 1979 and richer in plant life than anywhere else in Gujarat. Lions have settled there again — seventeen were counted in 2025, the first resident population since 1879.
Madhavpur Beach
Fifty-eight kilometres on towards Veraval, where Krishna is said to have married Rukmini — a good extension if you are carrying on down the coast.
Questions
Jamnagar to Porbandar — asked and answered
How far is Porbandar from Jamnagar?
Roughly 125 to 130 km by the Lalpur and Bhanvad road, which Google Maps gives about two and a half hours. It is much the same distance as Dwarka and takes much the same time, on a quieter road.
Can I see Porbandar and Dwarka on the same day?
They are only about 105 km apart along the coast, so it can be done — but it is a great deal of driving and very little sitting. Most guests take them on consecutive days, or enter both as stops in the booking form and let it price the loop properly.
What are the timings at Kirti Mandir?
Half past seven in the morning until seven in the evening, which is generous enough that even a late start works. The Gandhi house next door is seen on the same visit, and the two together take under an hour.
Is there anything to do beyond the Gandhi sites?
Plenty, if you have the day. The bird sanctuary is inside the town, Barda Hills a short drive out, and the beach and the harbour fill an afternoon on their own.
Do you run a taxi from Porbandar on to Somnath?
Often. The onward coast run past Madhavpur and Chorwad is about 130 km, so Porbandar and Somnath sit naturally in one itinerary. Booked together they are priced as a single trip rather than as two separate hires.
