The trip
Somnath is a long day from Jamnagar and a lovely two. The temple stands right on the Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, and the last hour of the drive runs beside the water, so the arrival does half the work of the trip for you. Guests who leave before dawn manage darshan, Bhalka and the evening show and are home near midnight; those who take a night halt see the same things without once watching the clock.
The road we take
There are two sensible roads, and your chauffeur will choose on the morning. The quicker follows the coast — Porbandar, then Madhavpur and Chorwad, then Veraval — about 247 km with tolls, and a little under five hours by Google Maps. The inland alternative through Junagadh is shorter on the map at around 232 km but slower on the clock, and it is the one to take if Girnar or the Gir forest is also in your plan.
Good to know
- October to February is the season. The sea wind takes the edge off the afternoon and the evening show is comfortable to sit through.
- Mahashivratri, in February, is the temple's biggest night — worth planning for, and the one time a night halt must be booked well in advance.
- Cameras and telephones are not allowed inside the temple. Free lockers are provided at the gate, and entry itself costs nothing.
- A same-day return is roughly ten hours in the car before you count halts, so an Ertiga or an Innova is a good deal kinder on a family than a sedan.
- Taking the inland road? Junagadh's Uparkot fort sits right on it, and an hour there turns the slower route into the better one.

Around the temple at Prabhas Patan
Somnath Temple
First of the twelve jyotirlingas, rebuilt after independence at Sardar Patel's insistence and finished in 1951, when President Rajendra Prasad installed the linga. Darshan runs from six in the morning to ten at night, with aarti at seven, at noon and at seven in the evening.
The light-and-sound show
An hour on the temple forecourt after dark, listed by the trust at 8 pm and not held during the rains. It is the usual reason a Somnath trip turns into two days.
Bhalka Tirth
A short drive from the temple: the place remembered as where the hunter Jara's arrow found Krishna resting under a tree.
Triveni Sangam
Where the Hiran, the Kapila and the Saraswati meet before the sea — the customary closing stop of a pilgrimage to Somnath.
Prabhas Patan Museum
Three hundred metres north of the temple, holding carved stone from the shrines that stood here before. Open 10.30 am to 5.30 pm, closed on Wednesdays and on the second and fourth Saturday.

How long does the drive from Jamnagar to Somnath take?
Around four and a half to five hours each way on the coast road, which Google Maps measures at roughly 247 km. With halts, darshan and a meal, a same-day trip comes to twelve or thirteen hours door to door.
Should I do Somnath in one day or stay the night?
Both fares are in the table above, so the choice is yours rather than ours. The single day works if darshan is all you want; the night halt is what lets you sit through the light-and-sound show and drive back in daylight the next morning.
What time does Somnath temple open for darshan?
From six in the morning until ten at night, with aarti at seven, twelve and seven. Entry is free of charge. Show timings do shift a little with the season, so it is worth confirming locally on the day you travel.
Can we add Gir or Dwarka to a Somnath trip?
Very easily. Sasan Gir is a short run inland from Somnath and pairs with it over two days; Dwarka on the far coast makes the pilgrimage a longer loop. Enter each place as a stop in the booking form and it prices the whole itinerary, not two separate hires.
Does the night-halt fare include the driver's stay?
